Dr Nadine Lindblom BVSc (Hons)

Dr Nadine Lindblom has worked closely with horses for over 17 years and began teaching liberty training in 2013. Falling in love with the concept of training horses in a force-free manner, she immersed herself in understanding their mind and what truly motivates them. Recognizing the significance of a whole-horse approach to training, she pursued studies in Veterinary Science to complement her training journey.

After gaining experience in the equine veterinary industry, she decided to pursue her original passion for teaching and making a positive impact on horses worldwide. Now, she is eager to share this incredible way of being with horses—a method rooted in understanding, connection, communication, and autonomy, free from force and domination.

"Liberty is a truly extraordinary way of connecting with our horses, and it demands a deep understanding of how they think, learn and perceive the world. Liberty is often confused with obedience training, but a horse is only truly at liberty when he feels autonomous. It is this empowering state that opens the door to easy and fluent communication as well as playful and proud expression."

A Closer Look At What's Inside The Academy...

MODULE 1

Set Up For Success

This module is dedicated to setting you and your horse up for success so that your horse is willing and able to say "YES" to your invitation. In this module, you will dive into:

The Essence of Liberty Training: Discover the true meaning of liberty, what feeling you are searching for, and the core principles that you will carry with you throughout the rest of the course.

Equine Psychology: Learn the important differences and similarities between the horse and human brain, autonomic nervous system, and emotions. Reflect on how this affects the way we handle, train, and communicate with horses.

Leadership & Dominance: Dive further into science and challenge these commonly accepted notions. Examine how such mindsets can influence the way we work with horses.

Understand a Horse's Needs: Explore the essentials for your horse's well-being, both within and outside the training context.

Train Your Eye: Learn valuable practices to integrate into your daily routine, enabling you to gauge your horse's comfort and detect any signs of pain.

Furthermore, within this module, you will also be introduced to the three remarkable horses that you will learn from throughout the course: Levi, Billie, and Nellie. Each of the horses has very different personalities and responds in their own unique way!

Levi: Exudes confidence, playfulness, and sociability. Though eager to learn, he occasionally gets a bit too close when engaged in play, so setting clear and consistent boundaries was very important!

Billie: Has struggled with food aggression in the past and demonstrated some signs of pushiness and anxiety around food rewards. Billie also carries himself in a poor posture, so towards the end of the training series, we could explore a little bit of posture play!

Nellie: An incredibly sweet mare but has a history that has led her to become very unsure around humans and whips. She had learned that she was helpless and not in control over what happens to her. During the training, her confidence blossoms until she is even able to explore a little bit of play!

MODULE 2

Contact & Connection

Liberty is all about establishing a dialogue between you and your horse. This module focuses on the initial communications between you and your horse while at liberty. You will learn about:

  • Factors to keep in mind when selecting your training space.
  • Dealing with separation anxiety and how to support your horse during this emotional reaction.
  • The "initiation of contact" exercise, which serves as the first form of communication between you and your horse at liberty. This exercise encourages your horse to gain confidence, become curious, and approach you.
  • The first contact explained with Levi, Nellie, and Billie, illustrating the process in action.
  • Effective ways to nurture and strengthen your relationship with your horse.
  • Crucial aspects to keep in mind when setting important boundaries with your horse.
MODULE 3

Rewards & Gentle Guidance

This module focuses on how horses learn and what motivates them to willingly engage in training sessions. We will explore:

  • The psychology of different types of learning, with a specific focus on operant conditioning.
  • The in-depth psychology of positive reinforcement, why it is a fantastic training tool when used systematically, and its potential to lead to undesirable behaviors and emotions.
  • Negative reinforcement and where "gentle guidance" fits into this category, emphasizing the importance of using non-escalating pressure and giving your horse time to search and discover the correct response.
  • Strategies for introducing food rewards to your horse without promoting negative emotions or behaviors such as mugging, biting, or pushing. We also cover common problems encountered and how to resolve them.
  • The process of introducing gentle guidance to your horse in a manner that ensures he does not feel threatened, promoting a calm and thinking state of mind.
  • The importance of establishing boundaries in a way that does not harm the relationship.
  • Real-life examples of introducing rewards and gentle guidance to Levi, Nellie, and Billie.

In this module, you will also find a 1-hour unedited excerpt from a clinic demonstrating the first contact and introducing positive reinforcement to a horse with no previous experience.

MODULE 4

Advancing The Training

Now that your horse has been introduced to positive reinforcement and gentle guidance, we can advance the communication. In this module, we closely observe the sessions with Levi, Nellie, and Billie to:

  • Discuss the important concept and feeling of "moving together" at liberty.
  • Delve deeper into maintaining the connection even when your horse becomes unsure, stressed, or energetic.
  • Learn how to use your intention and energy to guide and influence your horse’s movement (gait, direction, and transitions).
  • Explore the incorporation of patterns and obstacles to refine communication.
  • Discuss mental transitions between high and low energy states, and how this can help your horse regulate his emotions.
  • Discover how to teach your horse to lie down at liberty.
  • Explore important methods to preserve and enhance your horse’s motivation.
  • Understand facial expressions and the reasons behind why many liberty horses lay their ears back.
  • Go over common problems and how to solve them!
MINI-MODULE

Posture Play & Collection

In this bonus, you will be introduced to posture play and collection at liberty. We will explore:

  • The key elements of this type of training, including your horse’s emotional state and using your mental picture, intention, and own posture to guide your horse.
  • Incorporating transitions and bursts of energy to influence your horse’s posture.
  • The importance of understanding correct biomechanics and training your eye to reward your horse at the right time.
  • The beginning of posture play with Billie in his final four sessions.
  • More content will be added to this module with time!

Nina Andersson (Sweden)

"The liberty training course has brought back the joy of working with my horses. I had never tried liberty training before but felt confident to get started after taking part of Nadine's very pedagogical and well organized material. At the end of the course I can honestly say I developed more during the course then I have during the last two years since I’ve had my own horses."

Maegan Thomas (Kentucky, USA)

"Nadine is one of the few trainers that has found a way to PRESERVE the horse’s playful spirit rather than suppress it on the journey to make them a ridable horse. Most excitedly, in the barely two months I’ve been applying Dr. Nadine’s material to my own horses, I’ve seen the beginning of this vivacious in my own horses!"

Louise Cooper (Qld, Australia)

"Since starting our sessions together and starting the course, I have gained a whole different mindset that I have been able to apply when working with both Levi and other horses. I cannot recommend to people enough that if they get the chance to work with, learn from or just be around Nadine, it is truly worth your time!"

Sneak Peeks

Licking & Chewing - What Does it Really Mean??

In Module 1 Lesson 3, we discuss the autonomic nervous system and the importance of a feeling of safety during training. A feeling of safety opens up the doors to social engagement, curiosity, play and seeking. In this lesson, we also discuss licking and chewing as this is something that is talked about a lot in the horse training world! There are many theories out there as to why horses do this (a sign of submission to the leader is a common one!), but what does science say?

Changing direction at liberty

In Module 4, we discuss the important elements in guiding your horse’s movement. This includes finding the feeling of moving together, influencing your horse's gait and direction, and moving through upward and downward transition.

In this excerpt, we look at a few different ways of changing direction and some tips and tricks for when you begin introducing this idea to your horse.

When Your Horse Disconnects

The moment that your horse disconnects at liberty is one of the most important and powerful moments in developing your connection. It is in this moment that you can show your horse that he does have a choice, allow him to feel seen and thus find a state of safety, allow processing time, release tension and much more. This session with Nellie, demonstrated this situation perfectly!

Session 12 with Levi!

Levi is very confident, playful and social! His sessions have focused on preserving his playful nature while ensuring that he maintains a safe distance. He also likes to go on "autopilot" as soon as he understands an exercise, so changing things up to keep him thinking and engaged has been very important. He has also provide the opportunity to demonstrate and discuss the concept of maintaining focus and connection in high-energy states as well as the importance of switching between high & low-energy states.

Nellie's Transformation

This beautiful little mare started off very internalised. She had learned throughout her life that she had no control over what happens to her and that she just needs to “deal with it”. It was clear that she had spent many years in a state of learned helplessness and dissociating from what her nervous system was telling her to do. As the sessions went on, she began to gain more confidence and her playful and expressive personality began to show!

Billie's Play With Posture

Naturally, Billie has a tendency to carry himself with a poor posture (first photo) - back hollow, head high, dropped thoracic sling, contracted under-neck and pushing out behind with the hindlegs. He grew in confidence and connection quickly to the point where beginning to influence his posture with intention, playful energy bursts and transitions became possible! Turns out he is quite the mover! You will find these sessions in the mini-module "Collection & Posture Play".

Course Reviews

"What drew me to Dr. Nadine’s work is the way her horses LOVE TO BE WITH HER.

Most trainers I see in person and online have animals in a state of learned helplessness. Although they obey, they lack any playfulness and spark in their soul. They appear listless and machine-like.

Nadine is one of the few trainers that has found a way to PRESERVE the horse’s playful spirit rather than suppress it on the journey to make them a ridable horse.

Of those few I have found, most of them have an air of mystery and “horse whisperer” aura about them that make them difficult to understand. Their methods have a haze of mythology around them that, although is certainly intriguing and something to learn from, makes it difficult to derive a technical method which you can apply at home to your own animals.

Nadine’s course neither is dressed in pretty verbal distractions or based on making the horse do something by depriving of them of any other options. Her psychological and physiological knowledge of the horse, common training methods, and how she introduces us to the method from this background knowledge, leaves no holes for ambiguity.

Nadine has no “tricks”, “magic tools”, “magic words”, or “quick fixes”. It’s all very real, bare and scientific, allowing you to clearly see what’s happening and why she does it while introducing this new training approach to the three new horses featured in the course.

Dr. Nadine’s social media, full of her adult horses performing difficult Haute Ecole elements while also playing like foals with her, is a testament that her method does work.

Most excitedly, in the barely two months I’ve been applying Dr. Nadine’s material to my own horses, I’ve seen the beginning of this vivacious in my own horses!

When the course ended, I was not left without many ideas on how to pursue my own unique endeavors using the material learned in the course. If you want a horse that engages in play with you, a TRULY EQUAL partner where both parties can walk away when they feel uncomfortable (yes, including the horse), and a dream relationship most believe to be impossible, and seemingly so few have obtained, Nadine’s course will definitely give you something to add in your horse training repertoire on that journey.

Thank you so much Nadine for your hard work in creating a course that are helping me shape my lifelong equine dreams!"

~ Maegan Thomas (Kentucky, USA)

"Nadine’s course is beyond incredible! She is raw, open and honest and is always about putting the horse and the relationship first. She explains everything very clearly with plenty of videos for examples. Nadine is always open to answer any questions and assist in anyway she can! I 10000% recommend this course!"
~Kaitlin Bailey (QLD, Australia)

"Absolutely the best liberty course out there! It has the most detailed and information packed lessons. Nadine is not only a fantastic presenter but such an amazing teacher!"
~ Klara (Slovenia)

"The liberty training course has brought back the joy of working with my horses. We’ve reached a hole new level of play and connection. Nadine is extremely generous with her knowledge and experience. The course is filled with both theoretical knowledge and lots of practical learning. I had never tried liberty training before but felt confident to get started after taking part of Nadine's very pedagogical and well organized material. At the end of the course I can honestly say I developed more during the course then I have during the last two years since I’ve had my own horses."

~ Nina Andersson (Sweden)

"I highly recommend this course! The theory part of this course is giving a solid foundation on how to work with your horse, based on research and the anatomy and physiology of the horse. The practical part is built up from the beginning with the foundation exercises and with a progression that is easy to follow, as well as considering that different horses may need a different approach. This is also emphasized by the three very different horses we follow through their lessons and how the training can be adapted to suit the individual horse. It has been challenging but has also given me many more tools in my toolkit when working with my horse, and we have just begun our journey into liberty training."

~ Siri Bjølseth (Bachelor of Equine Science, Equine Osteopath EDO | Norway)

"I’m absolutely loving this course, learning from home in my own time. Really easy format for a technologically challenged individual hehe. So much amazing content -obviously so much has been put into it. I’ve learnt so much already - can’t wait to get further along! Would recommend to anyone wanting a better connection with their horse- it’s really fantastic!"

~ Kacee Murray (Queensland, Australia)

"Absolutely love the layout and style of the website, it's really easy to navigate through and hop between lessons. Lessons are titled appropriately so it's very simple to look back and find information from each section as needed, and the content is fantastic!"

~ Sophie Stallman (Bachelor in Equine Science, Veterinary Student & Liberty Trainer | Queensland, Australia)

"Nadine truly makes learning fun! Her content it so well thought out and executed, and she puts so much effort in - and it really shows! Her way of explaining things, no matter how 'simple' or 'complicated' is clear and concise, and she makes sitting down to her course fun, engaging and so rewarding!

The use of case studies really helps to connect the theory to practice, and getting to see her work with horses that have never experienced liberty training, and follow through their sessions, really helps to cement everything you learn! I was extremely lucky to have my horse Levi (the giant grey clown one) used as one of the cases in Nadine's foundation course. As pretty-much newbies to liberty training, the experience both myself and Levi gained was invaluable! Not only did we have so much fun on our filming afternoons (anyone that has had the pleasure of meeting Nadine knows how kind, funny and brilliant she is!), but watching the change in Levi from the first session to the last session was so rewarding - he was happier than ever and you could tell he genuinely really loved their time together! Since starting our sessions together and starting the course, I have gained a whole different mindset that I have been able to apply when working with both Levi and other horses.

I cannot recommend to people enough that if they get the chance to work with, learn from or just be around Nadine, it is truly worth your time!"

~ Louise Cooper (Owner of Levi)
