Hi, I'm Nadine!

Are you ready to discover an extraordinary way of connecting and communicating with your horse? My goal is to guide you on this remarkable journey of liberty based on true freedom, play, rewards and gentle communication.

For over 20 years I have been exploring liberty and ethical horse training, and learning invaluable lessons from both world-renowned trainers and, most importantly, the horses themselves. With this, I bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise in equine psychology, training and the horse-human relationship.

In 2020, I earned my Bachelor of Veterinary Science, further enhancing my ability to provide evidence-based, ethical training techniques. My mission is to help horse owners around the globe understand their horses better and apply scientifically sound training methods.

I've had the privilege of teaching at clinics across Europe and Australia, and now I'm excited to extend my reach to the online community. "What drew me to Dr. Nadine’s work is the way her horses LOVE TO BE WITH HER. Most trainers I see in person and online have animals in a state of learned helplessness. Although they obey, they lack any playfulness and spark in their soul. They appear listless and machine-like.

MODULE #1

Set Up For Success

This module is dedicated to setting you and your horse up for success so that your horse is willing and able to say "YES" to your invitation. In this module, you will dive into:
  • The Essence of Liberty Training: Discover the true meaning of liberty, what feeling you are searching for, and the core principles that you will carry with you throughout the rest of the course. 
  • Equine Psychology: Learn the important differences and similarities between the horse and human brain, autonomic nervous system, and emotions. Reflect on how this affects the way we handle, train, and communicate with horses.
  • Leadership & Dominance: Dive further into science and challenge these commonly accepted notions. Examine how such mindsets can influence the way we work with horses.

MODULE #2

Liberty is all about establishing a dialogue between you and your horse. This module focuses on the initial communications between you and your horse while at liberty. You will learn about: 
  • Factors to keep in mind when selecting your training space. 
  • Dealing with separation anxiety and how to support your horse during this emotional reaction. 
  • The "initiation of contact" exercise, which serves as the first form of communication between you and your horse at liberty. This exercise encourages your horse to gain confidence, become curious, and approach you. 
  • The first contact explained with Levi, Nellie, and Billie, illustrating the process in action. 
  • Effective ways to nurture and strengthen your relationship with your horse. 
  • Crucial aspects to keep in mind when setting important boundaries with your horse.

Rewards & Gentle Guidance

This module focuses on how horses learn and what motivates them to willingly engage in training sessions. We will explore: 
  • The psychology of different types of learning, with a specific focus on operant conditioning. 
  • The in-depth psychology of positive reinforcement, why it is a fantastic training tool when used systematically, and its potential to lead to undesirable behaviors and emotions. 
  • Negative reinforcement and where "gentle guidance" fits into this category, emphasizing the importance of using non-escalating pressure and giving your horse time to search and discover the correct response. 
  • Strategies for introducing food rewards to your horse without promoting negative emotions or behaviors such as mugging, biting, or pushing. We also cover common problems encountered and how to resolve them. 
  • The process of introducing gentle guidance to your horse in a manner that ensures he does not feel threatened, promoting a calm and thinking state of mind. 
  • The importance of establishing boundaries in a way that does not harm the relationship. 
  • Real-life examples of introducing rewards and gentle guidance to Levi, Nellie, and Billie.

Advancing The Training

Now that your horse has been introduced to positive reinforcement and gentle guidance, we can advance the communication. In this module, we closely observe the sessions with Levi, Nellie, and Billie to: 
  • Discuss the important concept and feeling of "moving together" at liberty. 
  • Delve deeper into maintaining the connection even when your horse becomes unsure, stressed, or energetic. 
  • Learn how to use your intention and energy to guide and influence your horse’s movement (gait, direction, and transitions).

I often get the question:

"Do you work with horses that are new to liberty in the academy??"

 

Absolutely!! Throughout the above-mentioned modules, you will follow 3 horses with vastly different personalities in their first 13 sessions of liberty! These horses were specifically chosen for the academy to ensure that students are able to relate their horse to one or more of these horses.

 

Levi exudes confidence, playfulness, and sociability. Though eager to learn, he occasionally gets a bit too close when engaged in play, so setting clear and consistent boundaries while preserving his playful spirit was key!

Billie has struggled with food anxiety & aggression in the past and demonstrated some signs of pushiness and anxiety around food rewards. Billie also carries himself in a poor posture, so towards the end of the training series, we explored a little bit of posture play!

Nellie is an incredibly sweet mare but has a history that has led her to become very unsure around humans and whips. She had learned that she was helpless and not in control over what happens to her. During the training, her confidence blossoms until she is even able to explore a little bit of play!

More about my philosophy & approach

My philosophy and approach revolves around establishing a strong connection between horse and human, and providing the horse with choice and autonomy.

Horses are incredibly peaceful creatures and will always search for the path of least resistance and, therefore, it is (in most cases) easy to coerce a horse into obedience.

However, in these situations the horse will often lack the beautiful expression, motivation, play and power that comes with freedom of choice.

I incorporate trick training as a tool to enhance communication and improve the relationship. I also incorporate "power postures" and collected movements to help the horse find more confidence, balance and strength!

The communication relies on slow, gentle (non-escalating or forceful) guidance, always giving the horse time to think and the option to leave.

Rewards (positive reinforcement) are used to help motivate the horse to follow and search through the guidance!
