Ty's First Flying Change at Liberty

This video captures a truly special moment with Ty as he performs flying changes at liberty for the very first time. This high-level movement requires balance and collection, and what makes it so incredible is how seamlessly Ty offers it from my quiet cues. There’s no force, no pushing, pulling, or nagging—just pure harmony between us.

What makes this even more special is that Ty has full choice in whether or not to participate in the session. He stays connected by choice, offering this complex movement willingly. For me, it’s an incredible feeling to have such a large animal choose to dance with me, and I love him deeply for it.

While this may seem far off for someone new to liberty training, it shows the power of what’s possible once the right foundations are in place. These foundations—connection, gentle guidance, and systematic use of food rewards—are exactly what you’ll learn in The Essence of Liberty Online Academy.

Ready to start building this kind of bond with your horse? Join us in the academy and take the first step towards creating a relationship based on trust, choice, and true partnership.

The Basic Aids for Collection & Posture Play

In this video, I walk you through the basic aids for developing collection at liberty, with Ty demonstrating the calm focus that comes from our trust-based partnership. His ability to stay calm, even with food rewards present, is a key part of what makes our sessions so effective.

These foundational aids are the building blocks that allow us to influence the horse’s frame, bend, and balance—key elements that are essential for shaping true collection. It’s through consistent, patient practice that these small steps lead to the development of more advanced movements like piaffe and passage.

While this may seem daunting if you’re new to liberty training, it’s a reminder that progress comes through patience, consistency, and a solid foundation. This video offers a glimpse of the work we explore more deeply inside The Essence of Liberty Online Academy, where I guide students step by step in developing a strong, trust-based relationship with their horses.

Breaking Negative Associations with Travelling

In this video, I work with my mare Nina, who has developed some uncomfortable feelings around the trailer due to past negative experiences. This session offers a close look at the subtle signals she’s giving off—small shifts in body language and energy that many might miss but are crucial in understanding how she feels.

What makes this session so interesting is not just the act of loading, but how we address the negative associations Nina has built up over time. Instead of focusing on simply "getting on the trailer," I talk about the importance of breaking those associations and helping her feel safe and calm in the presence of the trailer.

Trailer loading can often be a source of stress, but with patience and attention to the subtle cues your horse provides, you can transform their experience and create a positive, trusting relationship with the process. This video is an excerpt from The Academy, where I dive deeper into these techniques and how to help your horse overcome fear and build trust.

Preserving Levi's Playful Nature

In this video, you’ll see Levi, one of the three horses students follow in The Essence of Liberty Online Academy, during his 12th session of liberty. Known for his boundless energy and quirky personality, Levi is a true clown who loves to express himself. The main aim with him was to preserve his beautiful playful nature rather than shutting him down like so many forceful methods can do.

As you watch Levi go from high-energy bucking and rearing to calmly lying down, you’re witnessing something extraordinary. For a horse like him—bursting with energy but also prone to anxiety—being able to transition from high energy to relaxation is a huge emotional breakthrough. This shift is possible because of the trust and connection we’ve built, allowing him to regulate his emotions and expand his window of tolerance.

This is the kind of work we do in the academy. Through liberty training, you can unlock the playful spirit in your own horse, even if they’ve been shut down by previous training. When horses have the freedom to express themselves, they can reconnect with their true nature—and so can you.

Ready to rediscover the joy of working with your horse? In the academy, I’ll show you how to engage, motivate, and connect with your horse in a way that is fun, rewarding, and full of trust.

The Playful Power of Liberty

This video showcases a playful and energetic session with Ty at liberty, where the focus is on his choice to engage in the training. When a horse feels at liberty, he becomes expressive and full of joy, making movements like collection come naturally and effortlessly.

But equally important is relaxation—balance between playfulness and calmness. Liberty training should build your horse up, not break them down into a robot. Ty chooses to follow my guidance, but the choice is always his, and as you can see, his answer is usually a resounding “HECK YES, LET’S GO!”

Playing on a hill adds an extra challenge to the movements, but Ty’s trust and enthusiasm shine through. Watching him embrace this playful, energetic state reminds me of the beautiful soul he is. Thank you, my special boy, for always showing up with heart and willingness.
